At least originally, I don’t think it’s a gag. It’s just plot armor. It’s not like it’s exclusive to Star Wars. There are so many movies where the main character(s) are running away from gunfire and the bullets just impact all around them but never hit. It just becomes a lot more obvious when you talk about how accurate they are, and then have them fire glowing lasers.
Some of the books even explain the “circumstances” of why they missed or certain doors closed or open at specific times. People having a change of heart, the right agent in the right place, someone just happens to see something on a video and open that door. Silly stuff like that.
