I will answer this question in the negative way: Do not only join the most popular ones, there are some hidden gems buried under the popularity rankings.

A personal favourite of mine is !pocketknife@lemmy.world, and I’m not even really into knives. It’s not the busiest community but the posts are consistently entertaining, informative, and well written so highly recommend
