Tempus is an open-source and lightweight music client for Subsonic, designed and built natively for Android.
This app works with any service that implements the Subsonic API, including:
- LMS - Lightweight Music Server - personal fave and my backend
- Navidrome
- Gonic
- Ampache
- NextCloud Music
- Airsonic Advanced

app-tempo* <- The github release with all the android auto/chromecast features
app-degoogled* <- The izzyOnDroid release that goes without any of the google stuff.
As usual, any dev contributions appreciated as I am not actually a java/mobile dev, so my progress is significantly slower than those who do this on the daily.
Big thanks to all the folks who have been contributing. We have a new icon designed but I could use some help if anyone wants to do a PR to implement it.
Thanks! Haven’t heard of LMS, can you share why you prefer it?
It was what I ended up with years ago after google play died and I went to self host. It was the easiest to stand up, configure, and get going not to mention back up and restore. Also, extremely lightweight. Nothing terribly fancy but the dev has made solid and continuous progress for years. I have seen some other back- ends but I’m hesitant to switch when this does everything I need. I also run it on a pi.
Amazing. Thank you for the Android Auto update!
an excellent community contribution!
Have it installed since the fork got public but the app always crash when I play a lot of songs and the phone goes idle, after waking up the phone, the app crashes. Maybe its the battery optimization. But I set them to unrestricted and background use allowed.
That’s a bummer. we have a issue open for the going idle part. I have not been able to track down or replicate it on my end but if you want to open or add to that issue to get more details that would be helpful. My suspicion is that it is a combination of particular configuration of settings that cause it.
This is beautiful!
I was looking for a way to stream to sonos, an I just blind or is it not implemented?
Not familiar with sonos but there is nothing in the app that is specific to sonos so you are probably not blind. In general, it only streams from your phone to a bluetooth or (if using the gh variant) chromecast which needs work.
amazing thank you! I didn’t realize Tempo was abandoned. you just saved my favorite app :D
yeah unfortunately been over a year and no response from the original dev. I forked this late last summer to keep it alive.
Great app! If there were Android TV support, I’d switch today.
Why the Tempo fork? I use Tempo currently, haven’t heard any bad things about it.
Tempo is abandoned
arghhh alright I’ll be switching over this weekend. Thanks!
EDIT: aaand done! :D
@myrmidex @superglue The fork is interesting. An earlier version forgot my navidrome server (and nuked my download cache), which was annoying; however, it’s gained some features that I really like. For example, when an album finishes it starts playing similar songs from other albums/artists. I didn’t think I would like this, but it ended up being pretty great (and it’s configurable if I need to turn it off). Very spotify-ish, but limited to stuff you have on your server.
That IS a nice feature indeed!
the original tempo got abandoned by its developer
