Just deleted reddit and working on getting off of facebook. I’m actually glad to be here. It’s a bit of an adjustment but I think it’s for the better. Cheers everyone.

It’s actually quite nice, conversations seem like you can get heard and people are generous with upvotes. It’s like Reddit was in 2010, but it’s been that way for a couple years (for me) now. I hope it continues.
Depends on what instance and what opinion you are towing, still. Though it is still a far cry better than Reddit.
It’s easier to choose and curate for oneself. Blocking comms actually works (even if blocking instances or users doesn’t). I don’t see any tankie comms anymore, even if I still have to argue with .ml users in comments on other threads.
And even though mods can ban from communities or instances, no automated admin bots can give you a site-wide ban over petty reasons. I can say I hate nazis without getting my entire IP banned for “hate speech”…
You can still get your account nuked by butthurt admins.

The admins literally administer the instances. Many of them directly running the instances on hardware they pay for. Even if the API didn’t allow it, they could just directly delete your user record from the DB.
Right, exactly, that’s my point. None of them can ban you from the fediverse, just their instance.
Well getting your account that you groomed up for who knows how long nuked is pretty damn close. Especially if you’re a main contributor to a comm or two and all that work disappears.
This is why people use vpns and act like jerks… potty mouths and people with strong opinions get nuked. Life has cold hard realities and people lack framework to have opinions. There are more of them than me. I call this phenomenon “The Turd Herd” If I wasn’t broke as a joke I would have a instance and let people run wild. Also, that doesn’t change the fact that no instance admins can ban your IP across the whole fediverse, so it’s still not as bad as reddit…
Lemmy does seem to have some insular thinking (just like all social media communities). Feels like you can actually have discussion and at least learn why people hold those views instead of just being chastised.
