As it was recently discussed a lot of the data you generate while using the fediverse is public. If we’re looking at the threadiverse even more of it is public including your votes.
I only know the specifics of Mastodon and mbin, so maybe @rimu@piefed.social @nutomic@lemmy.ml @julian@community.nodebb.org and other devs can chime in here.
Voting on Mastodon is a lot more private than voting in the threadiverse. Only the author of a post (and their instance) knows everyone who voted on a post. Everybody else can retrieve the total numbers, but not the individual votes. Of course this comes with the downside that everyone else has to fetch this data and while the instance could send an Update activity - informing other instances that the numbers changed - Mastodon currently does not do that.
In the threadiverse on the other hand, every single vote gets send around the network, including all the details.
I would like the threadiverse software to get a bit better at privacy. Mastodon is often restrictive with activities for that exact reason and while I do not want to completely screw visibility by not sending anything to anyone, I think the visibility of votes can be improved a lot.
So my proposal would be: votes are only sent to the author of a post. The author then sends an Update activity to their followers and the magazine the post belongs to. The magazine then announces this Update activity to all its subscribers. The post object has to contain the relevant numbers of course and Mastodon and PeerTube use shares, likes and dislikes (PeerTube only). These properties then contain a Collection with a property called totalItems and not a list of the people who actually voted, that would defeat the purpose (looking at you PeerTube)
Because nobody wants to break federation with other software, it would be nice if this could be coordinated between all the threadiverse actors

Hi there,
Thank you for that update. But why should this deleted comment be restored again? Will it be removed forever even if it is re-instated? The problem is because before this comment was taken down by admins, I tried to politely ask this user,
@Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus to have the comment containing my real full name erased by him. But unfortunately he ignored and said he won’t conform with my request for removal and he might reconsider removing it for me in case I can manage to have the article from Heise deleted. Even if I tried to clarify, I don’t have to reach Heise requesting removal as my name has never been published in any of their articles, he stopped replying after that. He might have misunderstood the context of the news publication as I have nothing to do with the dispute between the owner of archive.today and Jani Patokallio. I have been impersonated by Denis Petrov who owns archive.today. In other words, my name has incorrectly been associated with it. That is why admins deleted this comment because it contains defamatory information referring to my identity that can be harmful. Why do we have to require permission from the user, “Wildmimic” to have it removed from the mod log if it is was deleted by admins? Once this remark was removed by admins, they didn’t require a confirmation of the user. If you don’t receive a response from him or he refuses to cooperate, how can I get my name removed from the mods log? But even if you don’t hear back from the user, but an admin from anarchist.nexus responds to you, can you complete the removal process? Due to privacy reason, that is very important for me to have this comment purged from most of the servers. If they don’t respond at all, what will happen? I do not wish my name to remain available via millions of servers indeed.
Please let me know what can be done with this scenario.
Thank you.
It will need to be restored only so that the user can delete it themselves. I have asked them as their instance admin, so I anticipate they will comply. We will need to give them a reasonable amount of time to respond though.
I think this is the only viable way to get this done easily, given the way federation works, so I think we should give it a shot.
Hi there,
I agree with you. Even if this user @Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus was not willing to remove this comment for me, I think they should comply once knowing it is requested by you as their instance admin that can make a difference. I know we have to wait for a reply from them that may take some time to occur. Of course, I hope it will work. Inform me on further progress or updates if you have one.
Thank you.
Hi again,
Ok, so good news.
The user has agreed to delete the comment in the morning (it would be 3am for them now as they messaged me about an hour ago) so that should also give Mr Kaplan time to restore it.
So if you check in about 8-10 hours, hopefully it will be deleted.
Hi,
I am glad to hear the good news. If it is the case and you received a confirmation from them, it means we just need to wait for MrKaplan to restore comment and then to have it removed.
Please inform me about further progress and updates.
Thank you again.
