It’s not federated on PieFed.social because NSFW, I guess it’s the same on other servers. Make 2 accounts for that, one wherever you want, and the other one on fedinsfw.
The person you replied to isn’t a Piefed user…
In this case it isn’t. Lemmy.today federates with fedinsfw.app.

As you are on lemmy.today, which federates with fedinsfw.app (https://lemmy.today/instances), you should be able to subscribe to (join) communities on fedinsfw, e.g. !fedinsfw@fedinsfw.app (https://lemmy.today/c/fedinsfw@fedinsfw.app) .
Maybe you need to unblock visibility of posts flagged as nsfw to see any content in the spicy communities.
