Russia still has a lot of men, doesn’t it? They will still be able to continue making kids. This isn’t enough to wipe them out as a civilisation.
I wonder how long it would take for enough men to die in the war for Putin to either call it off or for Russia to be in danger of not having enough men to reproduce safely.
That’s true, but they still have enough men to repopulate if they were to take drastic measures like forced insemination. There must be a natural, minimal number of men under which even that would start to lead to inbreeding. I don’t know whether that number is in the thousands or hundreds. Probably not millions.
Edit: I looked it up. According to a recent study in 2022, species with low reproductive rates (would need to read the entire thing, maybe they explain how low) need at least 1000 individuals to counter extinction due to inbreeding depression and maybe 10k to prevent genetic drift.
Sex ratio is also important, so I’d assume the optimal would be 1:1. But that’s being torpedoed right now. So, I would still assume at least 10k men need to be left. There would be millions of women left in Russia, but I imagine that 10k shouldn’t inseminate millions of women otherwise the risk would of inbreeding would still be large.

They were well below stable population growth before the war actually

I haven’t found any articles about that yet.
