Windows is the safe (or was) default. If you walk into most companies, that’s what everyone has. If you buy a PC, that’s what’s installed. Using Linux or Mac is a conscious choice. That “us vs. them” feeling tends to foster community.
I want to say this came about as a reaction to hippy culture in the '60s, but I’m not really sure. It was definitely around in the '70s, though. America has become more and more relaxed about dressing in public since the '60s so stores and restaurants wouldn’t have needed to post such signs prior to that era.

Fires are only a small percentage of the calls most departments respond to. The majority is EMS, with various calls for some type of service making up the rest. As such, firefighters spend a lot of time in training for the various kinds of situations they’re called to. There’s also maintenance of equipment and gear, certifications, and in some cases, inspection of buildings for compliance. In my area, local departments have been funded to hand out smoke and CO detectors to homes that don’t have them, as well as change batteries.
Add to that eating, sleeping, and exercise. Firefighters go from 0 to 100% when the alarm sounds, and that can be taxing on the heart, so cardiovascular fitness is essential.

The job market sucks and it’s only getting worse. A full-time job doesn’t provide the same standard of living it did for previous generations. I don’t like how there’s so much pressure to have a side hustle that makes money versus just having a hobby you enjoy, but for some people that’s their only option. But I don’t hate them, I hate the system.

As an American, Scots are the most difficult to understand. Most Brits, Welsh and Irish are fine. Australians and New Zealanders, too. Canadians can be almost indistinguishable to me with the exception of a couple of words here and there.
LOC is a terrible metric. The worst programmer I ever had work for me had the highest LOC of anyone on the team, and his code was crap that barely worked.

I worked in that industry (for a company that used Fiery print controllers with some products), and this is standard practice. Our machines took forever to boot up because of limited RAM and slow CPUs. Even their latest machines, which we have at my current employer, struggle. One can only imagine what newer ones will be like with the current RAM situation.
