2·11 days agoNicely done.
You got me completely. I’ve been banning spammers all day (I’m working on some mod tools that help identify some that fell through the cracks and should help us respond to reports better going forward), so my first reading was “Spammer?” lol.
Thank you for a very much needed laugh!

Dad Jokes@lemmy.world•Sexuality as a Topic and Other FeedbackEnglish
171·1 month agoI’m glad to see this here.
I think in the same way that the reddit community “Explain Like I’m Five” doesn’t require explanations to be geared towards actual five-year-olds, I think DadJokes are best described (and most commonly) silly puns. Jokes that tend to elicit a groan along with laughter.
I don’t think gearing them towards children is necessary at all, and so I would remove the concern about sex completely.
I’m an adult. I’ve never had kids. I enjoy dad jokes. It’s not about being an actual father, either, come to that.

1·1 month agoI’m definitely not a month behind, and your request sounds familiar. There are ways for things to fall through, and I think that’s what’s happened here. A month or so ago I was sitll even more new than I am now. heh. Looking at your profile, I’m comfortable giving you moderator. I assume you’re wanting the Sims 2 community, but please remind me of your request and I’ll take a look today, or at least when I hear from you.
I apologize that it got lost - and it was probably me that lost track of it specifically.

3·1 month agoTo my knowledge, it’s better to have an alt account on the instance where the community is so you get notifications of reports, which is why I think some mods appear twice in some communities. :)

13·1 month agoOh, and a note on those two communites - someone (I don’t remember the username, so might even be you, but I think it’s someone else) has a pending request that is on my to-do list. I think it’s those two specifically. I just don’t have it handy in front of me - but if it is specifically those communities, probably working that tomorrow. :)
edit: lol, I got curious. It is you. Probably transfer those tomorrow :)
edit2: Actually, I see your activity in the first community I transferred which is plenty of assurance for me - went ahead and transferred. Thank you for volunteering! I’ll reply to the ticket now as well :)

7·1 month agoSpeaking only for communities on lemmy.world, since I’m an admin here and more recently am working a lot of these requests - any community that I do give to a new mod comes with the disclaimer that I contact the old mod(s) and if I’ve missed their activity, or they otherwise show up again - not much is permanent, including this. So at least here on lemmy.world, if I were to give away someone’s community and they popped up to protest, it’s all but certain I’d give it right back - although I might see if they’d be willing to bring on that other person as a mod to work with them, but as of yet this hasn’t happened, so we’ll cross that bridge when and if it does. :)
Also, to you and everyone else who moderates: Thank you. You are indeed the first line of defense against spam and bigotry, and often are integral to making your communities grow. I’ve been a moderator (and am so) as well as an administrator here, reddit, and other places - and each has its own joys and difficulties, but mods are absolutely in the trenches. :)

281·1 month agoSpeaking only for lemmy.world… I think I’m probably the main one looking at these requests right now, but I think we genereally look for:
- Idle mod(s) (number of existing mods doesn’t matter - I transferred a community with four idle mods)
- I prefer to see the requestor participating in that community, but strictly speaking, it’s not mandatory
- I do look at the requestor - how new are they, how much to they participate in Lemmy? More importantly, I look at their modlog. And I look at their posting - how do they interact with people?
Not so concerned about the acticity of the community per se or some of the other listed points. And if you think a community is not moderated but aren’t sure, you can ask - worst I can say is “sorry, no”. :)
If I transfer a community and the idle mod(s) come back (which hasn’t happened yet except one who replied to me and said "Oh yeah, I was gone for a long time, and it’s okay, I don’t want the community back), there’s always a chance that if they appear to truly be back to Lemmy, I might see if the requestor and they can share modship or something.
And I do look at the requestor. And not just if you have modlog entries, but the type of entries. You can run afoul of community rules and still appear to be a pretty decent person. But I have seen requests from folks who participated in many personal attacks / incivility as well as bigotry of various kinds, and… no thanks.
If you do want to take over moderating, the most important thing to us, I think I can safely say, is try to moderate fairly. It’s often subjective, but try. And definitely do not ignore open reports. You should process them - either to remove the reported content or close the report if the content is okay - ideally at least daily, but at a BARE minimum if your community has open reports older than a week, we may look to replcae you with someone who can process reports. (Disclaimer: We have some old open reports on the server and we’re working on trying to make those get processed sooner, so I’m aware this might sound ironic. We are all volunteers, and we try to give patience as well as hoping for your patience)
Feel free to ask/discuss here, but in general one of the best ways of asking us (for lemmy.world communities) is to make a thread at !c/support and ask there.
Also, if any of the folks who have asked sees this - I have a backlog a few days old - frankly, some of them I wanted to check with some of my fellow admins who have been a bit busy of late, so some things are running a little slow, but we haven’t fogotten about you. Unless we have. But I have several open requests, a couple of which I plan to work through tomorrow. :)
I’m also trying to be around more visibly here. I don’t know all of our policies or have access to all of our tools, but I can do a few things. :)
Also, I’ll give one example that still makes me happy: !c/coffee was the first request I filled as an admin, and the new mod really kicked off posting, and the community is also so active. I love seeing them pop up in the feed, and knowing that I helped in a tiny way to make that happen. So if you want to help grow a community - you can post in it and not have to moderate it - but if you want to also put in the time to work on the reported posts and comments, by all means, put in the request!

New Communities@lemmy.world•Hans Zimmer Fans - Lemmy.WorldEnglish
51·2 months agoI did a little googling (and recommend others do instead of just upvoting/downvoting on vibes), and it appears that a former employee claimed to have faced discrimination after coming out as trans. Whether that’s enough for someone to be bothered is a choice for them to make.
I’m personally not sure that signing on to the new HP is itself a very clear indicator. I will not support JKR’s projects these days, and for me, I have stopped consuming Harry Potter completely. I’m just saying that it can be a hard decsion where to draw a line and what lines not to cross.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How come there is not a community for new mods to get in discussions with seasoned mods that is not adversarial? That way the newbs can learn from old guard and old guard learn from the new?English
2·3 months agoThis is also a good reminder to me that I do have to be careful what I say… since I am an admin. heh.
I do want to be a little more visible - I’ve always liked when reddit admins were. I think one of the problems with reddit is that you could never talk to the admins. So I’m trying to change that a bit.
Probably there won’t be a whole lot of visible change for anything I manage to do. But I’m hoping it’s still helpful and an improvement.

6·3 months agoExcellent timing on this post.
First of all, I’m not sure how new users are invited to the Discord that I’m aware of, so I don’t feel very comfortable in addressing that - but there is a Discord where some mods hang out.
But second of all: I’ve relatively recently been added as an admin here on lemmy.world. It’s been a very slow onboarding process for any number of reasons - for one, it’s summer so I know in places that actually have vacation days, some folks have been out on vacations. Also, there’s not really a formal admin on-boarding process, if I may be so bold as to say so. Not that I think it’s a problem - I’m slowly gaining access to more of the tools we use, and slowly seeing what all we do, so I’ve started to take a few actions, but not much yet.
But one of my big missions is that I have had some moderation and administration experience in other places that I want to bring in here.
Just yesterday in one of the admin’s groups I posted something about trying to pick up more of what we are doing so I can participate more in doing those things. But also:
One of the things I’ve noticed about sites like Lemmy - but also reddit, which I will say I ahve some experience with as well - is that because anyone can start a community, and by starting a community become its sole mod, and remain its sole mod unless they add more people - the people who start communities are not always good moderators. Just because they may well lack the skills and experience.
And I think that’s an issue on sites like Lemmy and reddit, where a lot of the users’ interactions with “authority” are community (or subreddit) moderators.
When I asked about moderator onboarding, the answer I got so far was “I think we have a few things somewhere” - but not an answer where yet. I’m sure someone will point me there, but I don’t have it yet.
I think it’s very important. I’ve had a few idea on some things I’d like to do. One of which is to find communities that the mods have abandoned - well, we do keep an eye on those already. And in fact, if you find a community that appears that the mods haven’t done anything on Lemmy in a few weeks or more, and you’d like us to consider handing the community over to you (or perhaps start a thread in the community discussing and give us a list of people who volunteer), post over at !support@lemmy.world and we’ll investigate. I’ve been involved already in a couple of communities that had mods who hadn’t been around for a couple of years and helped get them handed off to new mods.
But I also want to have a dialogue with new mods - particularly those who don’t have previous moderating experience. I see a lot of mods taking actions that are rather unfriendly and unwelcoming - from removing things and banning people for insufficient reasons to just handling moderating poorly.
I’ve found that while you can’t do much against people who come just to troll, opening a dialogue with people who are new to your community who break the rules usually without intending to - or not understanding WHY the rules are the way they are - a surprising amount of time, being patient with them and explaining actually helps.
Also, over on reddit where there are some good moderator tools and the ability to have notes on a user that only mods can see (that also link to the comment where the note was added so you can easily see the reason for the note) - it allows for doing things like first giving a warning; then, if they repeat the behaviour, escalating to a one-day, three-day, seven-day, thirty-day, and THEN a permaban only if needed. (Although egregious violations can skip steps and go immediately to permaban if bad enough).
It can be difficult because it requires time, energy, patience, kindness. And a lot of the time, you still get personal attacks from the moderated user. But a lot of the time… it’s worth the effort.
So I don’t yet know where this will end up. I’ve sent a message to one of the admins who does a lot of the looking at abandoned communities to see if some of what I want to do is plausible without interfering with their work. Haven’t heard back, but gotta give a couple/few days - everyone is busy with life.
I don’t plan on doing anything too radical, I can’t imagine. But I definitely want to work with mods to help show them a better way to interact with users - although again, understanding that, to quote Cool Hand Luke, “Some [people], you just cain’t reach”. But the ones you can can turn into valuable community members. I won’t give specific details that would identify myself, but I saw this firsthand on subreddits I moderated as well as other sites.
So I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread and hopefully posting here again in a few days or so with some updates - maybe giving those who express interest whatever info I can as I’m able.
So nothing concrete yet, but I’m hoping to help change this exact experience.

https://mony.world/ exists, hosted by us, if you want to play with it. (I wasn’t involved in the setup, so can’t answer much about it)
As someone not fond of Discord, it seems pretty decent and pretty Discord-like.
