I was 429ing a little too liberally, so I upped my burst rate. This week, just like last week, most of my traffic was bots. But if a real user does come by, I want his or her experience to be pleasant enough.

Fun! Took the youngest trick or treating, the others went with their friends. Notably, when combined, the kids brought homr 87lbs of candy.
Calling people NPCs because they use AI is pretty ironic. Using a tool doesn’t make someone less human, any more than using a calculator makes someone incapable of thinking. The real question is whether people are using AI to expand their thinking or outsourcing it entirely. Blindly repeating AI-generated content is one thing; using AI as a tool for creativity, learning, or productivity is another. Judge the thought, not the tool.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you still use fluorescent lightbulbs in 2026? Or any other bulbs that aren't LED?English
3·12 days agoI have some CFLs that are still hanging on. One in a closet, another in the bathroom. Oven light is incandescent bc it’s an oven light. Finally car headlamps are incandescent bc, in my car, they provide more photons where I need.
General purpose lighting is largely LED and then special purpose lighting may be something else.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Could we replace college with something like Chess or Go, for general intelligence requirements?English
1·14 days agoOh yeah, I see that. I read this as college admission, not the four year degree itself. In that case, no I don’t really think it could be replaced.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Could we replace college with something like Chess or Go, for general intelligence requirements?English
12·15 days agoWe could! IMO college gets you ready for reading, writing, and problem solving in a workplace. Anyone who can study chess and then perform on the board would IMO be qualified to study in the college setting.
Is this realistic in the world we share? Another question entirely.

8·20 days agorootis a user account that has all privileges and is what bots are programmed to probe, so exposing it introduces unnecessary risk. IMO there’s no reason to permit root login via ssh in any circumstance, ever, in all cases, absolutely. For all the people thinking, “well the world doesn’t work in absolutes, there’s always a special case!” There isn’t.
If a user needs to use elevated permissions, there are many ways to do that without exposing root. sudo(8) is one way to do that.

14·20 days agoIMO ssh is the tool you’re describing. My ssh server is exposed to the WAN and is configured like this:
- set to a random port to reduce spam (completely eliminated it for me)
- set
PasswordAuthentication no - set
PermitRootLogin no

4·21 days agoI told my dad that even if climate change isn’t real, or if it is humans don’t contribute… what’s the harm in doing something about it? What’s the harm in doing something to help your grandkids have a world to grow up in and enjoy?
