Yes. And that in itself can both be helpful and harmful. I’ve seen people to whom that was like a therapy. Also as those already ‘give’ something to focus on, so you do not use logical judgment to find where to focus to. This lead to unwise decisions.

Co-op is using capitalism to fight some harmful effect of capitalism itself. Many Conmunist movements believe there are better and stronger alternatives.
This can be especially true for industries that are centralized by nature. You can’t set up production ready silicon factory or power plant today to set up a co-op. The more practical alternative is to set up union to protect rights of workers.
It isn’t communism, but sometimes making a co-op turns out to be more successful than forming union inside fragmented industry. A prominent example is amul from India. Instead of of forming union against highly capitalistic dairy industry, milk farmers and workers made a co-op that replaced those capitalist industries with market force.
The point was though this initiative got direct support from the government not some agenda against it.

What’s the problem with it? These MIT programs already exists. Anyone can make proprietary version. Including in Ubuntu doesn’t change that.
Also your example is pointless. Canonical would rather make a proprietary pam module instead of a custom internal fork of sudo-rs.
Not recommending software. As you mentioned old hard disks, it is better to copy the files or better dd them on a ssd. That way making index and finding duplicates will be faster cause you’ve to access files once and not care about fragmentation if you dd.

Not an IT, a friend onced told me their phone was getting hot and draining battery fast from last night. Naturally I asked if they installed any new apps or changed settings couple of times and the answer was clear no.
I checked the apps list and saw an obviously sus app (might be miner). I asked from when they had that app and they said ‘why? I installed it last night’.
That was the kind of app you get clicking ‘horny milves in your area’ ads.
You say KDE hangs, but what component hangs actually? It it plasmashell (other apps work but panel is dead?)? Kwin (windows move/respond to input?)? KDE apps?
I would suggest you to install a distro with kde (fedora KDE edition or open SUSE, not neon) if you’re not confident with administration. Use something like Kinoite for accidental breakage protection, or if you want to keep /home as is, install fedora 42 inplace (the new installer).
Not only my experience but also that of many KDE devs say that fedora KDE is probably the best mainline KDE experience (ignoring niche distros or customized KDE).
Also, don’t use xorg session. Always log in to default wayland session unless you have incompatible usecase (in that case you know what you’re doing).
