Reading the article, I was wondering about the temporal nature of these. It is probably best to avoid spoilers (so maybe don’t answer?), but I could see these apertures closing on someone featuring into a horrifying chapter indeed!
First, I’d definitely recommend reading The Terror (and watching the phenomal TV show by the same name). I won’t comment on what happens at the polynya, but if “going into a hole in the arctic ice and getting stuck under the surface” is scary, the book certainly has that in it, very early on in one of the most horrifying chapters ive ever read in anything, ever.

That book was amazing! I started reading it at friends house and had to buy my own copy to read the ending.
