A thought occurred to me that the early days of the internet had a lot of stuff like this. Illustration, music, animation, comics, etc.
Are there places like this these days that I’m not aware of?
Check out Pixelfed. Just subscribe to hashtags that interest you and it will pull in art from across the Fediverse.
Pixelfed is one of the best things on the internet IMO.
Lots of musicians share their music for “Name your price” on Bandcamp and 0 Dollars is an option.
https://www.pixiv.net/en/ artists post all kinds of works and the ones that want donations typically have a fanbox or something similar in their bio.
As with all lemmy, the volume is low, but we do have c/artshare here with some frequent callers. Here on World, I think
Remember when the Internet was about collaborating instead of making money and getting famous. I think we will never see that again
Itch.oi is like the old flash games sites like Kongregate
Man, I forgot all about Kongregate. Flash games with achievements was a cool idea.
Oh yeah. Thanks!
I know of https://opengameart.org/
It might fit the bill.
Free music archive https://freemusicarchive.org/ has a lot of music licensef under the various creative commons licences
For photography, maybe https://unsplash.com/ ? The site is commercial and many people upload stuff for self promotion reasons, but still, most photos are available for free and under a rather permissive licence
There used to be a huge art site called deviantart
It still exists but I wouldn’t recommend it. They’ve went all in on AI and got really annoying with their paid tiers. I deleted my gallery there. Not interested in training their AI.
That’s so sad. I was gonna look it up as soon as I got through this thread. This is the last comment here for me :( I loved DA in the 00s
I find Blue Sky gained a lot of the artists that left Twitter. Many post freely, post commissioned works, or have a donation or subscription based platform to share work on. Discovery is ass, but many repost or comment on other artists so you can find a lot of similarly interesting creators that way.
Presumably they’d just upload it on their social media platform of choice nowadays?
Looking for art that has a Creative Commons licence, is a way to find this kind of free art. eg. Search for: ‘creative commons pictures’
