A circle design is the most resistant to case expansion. I think any other shape will have weak points which will lead to misfires. That and aerodynamics as (just about) any other shape likely drift out of control and negatively impact ballistics.

Easier to drill a hole in a straight line than it is to drill a hole then broach a square in a straight line for barrel manufacturing. Square Holes! - This Old Tony
