TIL there’s actually a difference between coffin and casket. Coffins are tapered to the body (6 or 8 sides), usually with a separate lid, typically far cheaper. A casket is a rectangle with a hinged lid, typically with rails attached for carrying and usually far more ornate & expensive.


Why would coffins be far cheaper? Isn’t that a significantly more complex shape, adding overall labor? Do a few hinges really add that much more work/materials? I don’t see why shape would determine how ornate it ends up being, either
The effort and build quality are usually different levels
