      Expanding on question 1:

Yes. You signed up from Lemmy.zip, who have their own set of rules for what is appropriate (as linked by trashcan). If you break them you’ll likely be kicked out.

Furthermore, the sites and communities you interact with can ban you from talking to them: If the admins on the site I’m on (piefed.social) find your content to be inappropriate, they can ban your content from reaching users over here. That wouldn’t affect you as much as being banned by lemmy.zip - it would just keep you from interacting with users and communities hosted at piefed.social.

Moderators of individual communities can also ban you, if they find that you break the rules in their community. If you’re banned from a community you cannot participate in it any more.

Last, users can block you if they don’t want to see your posts.

There’s less of the funky shadow banning that Reddit does here, where your posts are rendered invisible to anyone but yourself without you knowing. I don’t think that can happen at all.

I’m pretty sure it can happen sometimes. If you try to post to a community you’re banned in, you might still be able to hit “send”, it will show up in your profile, and yet it won’t be seen by anyone in that community. I’ve never bothered to figure out why this happens (and only sometimes), maybe there’s also something funky going on with defederation between instances.

To clarify instance is like ( zip, world ect…) and community is like individual ( ex newtolemmy). If community bans me, i could still talk to other instances and communities just not one i am banned from correct?

I guess i am just worried , i got banned from reddit over power tripped mod who didnt like comment . So i am trying find new place to socialize and see things. Still learning how lemmy works though. Is their a place to see on voyager app/lemmy zip how many upvotes their is we have? Or its not Existent ?

Yeah, moderators of a community can only ban you from that community, server admins can only ban you from their instances. The only ones with the power to ban you completely are the lemmy.zip admins.

There are some power tripping happening here as well, but you’re a lot less vulnerable. Just don’t be a jerk and you should be alright. :)

Karma points is not really meaningful here, so I’m not sure if there’s a way to view it from Lemmy.

and then you can just make a new Lemmy account on a different instance

As @cabbage@piefed.social mentioned, you’re signed up at Lemmy.zip, not Lemmy.ca. This community was created at lemmy.ca’s instance and therefore you must follow their rules, your instance’s rules, as well the individual communities.

Its not as bad as it may sound.

Technically yes, but generally the instance rules are pretty similar. If you want to be extra cautious it’s worth checking however. For example lemmy.world is stricter about discussing piracy methods than most other instances are.

Edit: to elaborate, there are some instances with wildly different rules, and as a lemmy.zip user you may encounter some at the more extreme ends. My instance automatically blocks some of the more extreme ones so I never see their communities or users. Yours has a more open policy iirc.

You can view the list of federated and blocked instances of yours on this page.

Be warned however, anyone can make a Lemmy instance and you probably don’t want to explore the ones yours decided necessary to block. Look at the list but don’t open the domains.

This page is a better representation

    Welcome!

I like to share these two guide pages because I find that people like the infographics:

What is the Fediverse (which includes Lemmy) and how it works: https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/get-started

How Lemmy specifically works (ex. where are the communities, where are the users): https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/lemmy/for-users/detailed-overview

Hopefully these guides are helpful, alongside all the other great advice people have shared :)

Lemmy is a federated platform. That’s a new (or at least newly popular) term, but it’s not a new concept. It’s a lot like email, and the answers are going to be the same, for the same reasons:

Can you be banned from lemmy email ?

Not really. Your specific email provider might ban you, in which case you’d need to get a new email address from a different provider. Same deal with Lemmy; your Lemmy instance’s admins might ban you, but they have no power over other instances.

Where can i find the rules?

Your provider will have their own rules. Most email providers will have rules about not spamming, or conducting illegal activity, etc. etc. Most Lemmy instances will have some basic rules that boil down to “don’t be a jerk” listed in the sidebar on the main page. I see that your instance does exactly that.

why do need picture every time i post

I’m not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate?

If you get banned from Lemmy.zip and you think it’s unjust you’re probably better off moving to another instance where you’re more aligned with the moderators. :)

I guess you could always send them a PM and ask what’s up, but the main idea here is that you find an instance with a moderation policy that suits you. Since karma doesn’t really matter here there’s not much value in having an old account anyway.

There are many different servers, and each of them has its own rules.

Don’t be afraid if you receive a ban from a server, as some admins/mods can be power-tripping douchebags. However, if you are getting multiple bans, you should start rethinking your behavior.
