It probably started with less voluntary players. As in two people betting on whether their prisoner lives.
Eventually some one decided it wasn’t hard enough and turned it on themselves
The name may come from stereotypes of life being grim and/or cheap in Russia
I’m willing to bet it had more to do with level of inebriation than suicidality.
