When magisk came it was great and doing everything it needed to do. Then the dev got work at google and having magisk on top of google measure to stop it became imposssible. U can have module that will likely nearly make it invisible but that wont work. The magsik dev as far as i know don’t intend for magisk to be this stealth solution that play proetct or pay or other measure couldnt detect. I dont use root extensively and with the passing of time i feel i might ditch it. I saw some emerging solution but nothing either for my modele or that i feel confortable using. Wich is a shame cause i have a neobank and if i cant use it my phone is useless. But simply for adaway im really to keep my phone root but dont wanna loose bunch of capability
Use adguard as private DNS, or use something like dns66 that creates a fake vpn and applies dns blocklists.
No need for root to block ads in 2025
yeah i never thought of that, simple and smart thanks
The only thing that Google won’t let the Magisk dev do is circumvent Google’s own Play Protect stuff. That’s it. He said as much when he got hired at Google years ago.
The problem is that Google is putting more and more things behind Play services instead of AOSP.
My bank lets me use my phone even if it’s rooted, so the only decision is AdAway or Google Wallet. AdAway is winning.
But what I really want is a viable Linux phone and ditch Google.
would love that, but a lot of banking app or even gouvernemental app would never come except if it s explose wich i dont think will happen soon
Yeah, they’re definitely not ready yet, and maybe never will be. But dealing with Google’s nonsense is making the tradeoffs seem more and more worthwhile.
I mean, you could use the private DNS feature instead of AdAway. No need of root for that. If you want to keep root anyway, IIRC there’s a project called kernelSU, which being “in kernel” is probably less detectable than Magisk. Keep into account that - you would need to unlock your bootloader anyway, which sometimes can be a big “no” for bank apps
- I don’t know if the project is still active.
- Someone has to have compiled a specific kernel for your device, with the requested patch, or you have to do it yourself.
I apologize if something is not exact, it’s been a long time since I have looked into it.
KernelSU is very much an active project. Last release was just two weeks ago.
Like Magisk did with SuperSU, and SuperSU did with other root solutions, KernelSU will likely end up replacing Magisk. I’m keeping an eye on it. Magisk plateaued after topjohnwu started working for Google.
do u have any recomendation for the private dns ? i looked into kernelsu and right now idont feel confortable using it for the moment
I personally use paid ControlD (it has a free DNS as well). Othew9you may try nextdns of Adguard dns.
