When smartphones were new you used to be able to turn them upside down and the screen would just rotate. Now you have to download an app to do that, and it doesn’t always work.
Pixel 8 pro user here, screen auto-rotate is right in the top edge drop-down menu and the phone gives a tappable icon in the corner if you turn the phone when auto-rotate is off. I have definitely never downloaded an app for this.
Holy shit I never really noticed I can’t turn my iphone upside down lol. My first gen iPad rotates at any direction, but I’m guessing tablets behave differently. I don’t own a more recent tablet so I don’t know if that’s still the case. But you’re right, I remember my first smartphone could rotate at any direction.

Pixel 7 here. It doesn’t go upside down for me. Yes, I get the tappable rotate icon as well. Still only upside up or sideways.
Just turned on auto-rotate for a sec to check and you are 100% correct. I get regular or either sideways, no upside down.
It’s literally a setting in android OS.
Not standard. I’m running a stock Pixel and it’s never been an option. Some third party AOSP forks add it in, though.
Where is that setting? I’m running Pixel 9a

I can still do this with my FP4 running e/OS. Just had to put a checkmark at 180° in the rotation settings.
