  • Trump too… No need to be stingy. There is enough hot air for everyone. No side has got a monopoly on it.

Currently, actual deeds by the Iranian regime are weak sauce.

An old Arab saying that I first heard in the Gulf War 1 days, said about Saddam: “Even the dog is a lion in his own neighborhood”

Iranians right now are talking big, but judging by their deeds, they are jumpy. Nervous. Mercurial. Disorganized.

Sadly, much like the US in Iraq, we figured out after starting a war and destabilizing the region and the global economy, that Saddam had done his job too well in the 30+ years he was in power. There was no one to take over if we deposed him. All competent opposition had been eliminated years before, effectively and quite intelligently, by Saddam. We are starting to realize the same thing is true in Iran. No parties, no politicians to step in and fill the void if the current regime were to suddenly fall.

  • Artefacts of a weird remodel. Owner probably on a budget or ran out of money and had to start making weird choices/compromises in order to get the thing slapped back together and shut his wife up. Lotta weird/stupid shit goes on in houses. Owners think because they understand 2 things that therefore they understand 5 things. Contractors give bad advice or propose weird solutions, often after the owner has run out of money or money’s getting tight. Usually cheaper to make some slapdash mess like this than to do things correctly. As you said- it’s just an air’b’nb after all. Sooner it gets rented, the sooner the cash cow starts producing milk. Most owners don’t really understand the cost side of owning/building and they certainly don’t understand the project management side or the time schedule side. Not a feature per-se, just some leftover evidence of either contractor or owner bungling which could have occured for any number of common reasons, almost all related to $$$$.

  • A quick mnemonic device for wiring receptacles:

black guys like gold, white guys like silver…

the black wire goes on the gold lug, the white wire on the silver lug. Green is ground if you’ve got one. another common mistake- the larger of the 2 slots is the neutral and on any receptacle/plug/whatever the SMALLEST hole or prong or blade is always the one that carries power (black wire).

the reasoning is that you always want to grant the largest surface area/conductor to the white and green wires which take electricity to ground and away from you so that YOU don’t become the ground yourself… when that happens it’s what we all think of as “getting shocked”.

People who don’t know better very commonly miswire receptacles and cords, falsely thinking that the biggest blade/prong/hole must carry the power because… <caveman voice> power big, ground little… </caveman voice> when actually the reverse is true for some rather abstract safety reasons.

  • use a ground screw or a grounding clip from the receptacle to the body of the metal box.

but likely a moot point because the receptacle itself has no grounding lug.

Just handle the old wire carefully. Baby it. Better still, replace it with something new. New stuff should last you 100 years. The old stuff, well, you can see how well that ages. Synthetic rubber & plastic technology was in a very primitive state before the 1970’s. That’s what the wires are insulated with- a form of synthetic rubber or an insulating type of plastic. Modern insulation (mid 70’s and later) are all forms of durable plastic that should last a long long time.

exception: electric cords and extension cords pre-1990’s… still a lot of older insulation materials that were prone to degradation with age/sunlight/ozone/heat but it wasn’t getting put into a wall in a house that could catch fire so no biggie… Any issue or defect would become apparent very quickly to anyone nearby.

  • It’s an offer Zelensky knows Putin will never accept. It’s a low key/high level trolling maneuver by Zelensky to bolster his public image internationally and make Ukraine look good. An empty gesture as far as the stated goal is concerned. Pandering to the EU, which Ukraine BADLY wants to join. Russia too, has floated peace talks in the past that were nothing more than empty gestures. It’s an Eastern Europe thing to do this sort of stuff. Just each side trying to “psych out” the other at various times. All empty gestures and hot air, much like the Iranians at the moment.
