The phrases “This shit is dope!” and “This dope is shit!” have exact opposite meanings.
Just like how something being bollocks is strong British condemnation, but being the DOG’S bollocks means it’s the fucking best!
What’s that about? Do British canines just have marvelous testicles? 🤔
Imagines a really messed up episode of “is it cake?”.
And telling someone “you’re shit” and “you ain’t shit” mean the same thing.
But both different from being “the shit”
And “this dope is the shit” means “this shit is dope.”
However, “this shit is the dope” does not mean “this dope is shit.”
But if this shit is the dope, pretty good chance that the dope is shit.
But in the case of “where’d you stash the shit?”, the dope is likely of at least usual quality.
If this shit is the dope, yes.
But not necessarily if this shit is simply the dope.
“shit” vs “the shit” “bollocks” versus “the dog’s bollocks” and so on
Usually, “shit” is worse than “ass” as a swear word. And yet, in “this shit is ass”, the negative sentiment is carried by “ass”, not “shit”.
Not quite exact opposite.
In the first sentence, ‘shit’ could be damn near anything.
In the second sentence, ‘dope’ is going to be cocaine or heroin or something close to that.
So they’re not exact opposites, as the potential scope of the subject of the first sentence is much more broad than the second.
“You ever think about all of your shit is stuff, and everyone else’s stuff is shit?”
-George Carlin
This is my kind of showerthought!
It is not very complex, both are generalist reference terms, shit can be a neutral referrer or have negative connotations and dope can be neutral or have positive connotations. So your two phrases decant to this referred to thing is a good thing and this referred to thing is a bad thing.
Now this shit is dope.
I’m not sure “This dope is shit” has ANY meaning, as I’m not sure anyone has ever said that. Ever.
Well if you got a shitty batch if heroin, what else are you going to say?
“Fnfnddndn” as the fentanyl hits your system?
Uhh someone doesn’t know about drugs apparently.
Yeah it does?
I disagree. In fact, I actually think that anything that can be said, has been said by someone, even if only one person.
Certainly not, just look at !brandnewsentence@lemmy.world for some examples of things unlikely to have been said ever before. (The non-federated link aggregation website has a busier version of that.)
