The existing chess community on lemmy.ml/c/chess seems to be dead, moderators are not reachable and is hosted on .ml which is defederated by many instances. Use this community for anything related to chess: news, memes, puzzles, guides, etc.
There is also the recent !woodpushers@quokk.au.
There are not enough active users on Lemmy/Piefed, there is obviously even less so that are playing chess. I’m not sure creating a new instance will solve that issue (I just joined, though ;)
Good to know, thanks. I do think having an obvious name is important when trying to grow a community, I have never heard of woodpusher before as a term for chess, so idk. But I’ll subscribe and check it out. I agree that the number of users is pretty low, so the chance of this failing is pretty high, but just wanted to try anyway :) Also the anarchy chess community at !anarchychess@sopuli.xyz does have over 6k subscribers and is at least a little bit active, so there should be some users around

You don’t have to check out the woodpusher community, there won’t be anything for you to see there. quokk.au defederated feddit.org a while ago.

it looks like !chess@lemmy.ml is averaging a few posts per month this year and has 2.4k subscribers; not very active but i wouldn’t call it dead.

the mods do seem inactive; i and other lemmy.ml admins remove spam if/when it gets reported (which has happened four times this year). if someone (with some posting history) wants to be added as a mod of it just let me know and i’ll add you.

In my opinion, many of its communities are also heavily protected to ensure opposing views are removed by aggressive moderation.

**Edit: as many have pointed out, my brain isn’t firing on all cylinders today… Hexbear was the instance it defederated from, not .ml… Sorry for the false info!

Huh? Lemmy.world has not blocked lemmy.ml, nor have (correct me if i’m wrong?) any other large instances.

imo the reason is pretty clear in the modlog you’re linking to. the ban duration was disproportionate though, so, i just unbanned you. (please do not advocate for the use of telegram in !privacy@lemmy.ml though! lmao)

Though, I am not sure I will ever participate in the Community, since I am afraid to be banned for a single message posted all of a sudden for years, in the unforeseen future. There’s no trust in the effort and time I would invest there anymore, I am sorry.

yes, you are mistaken.
Russia has strengthened and later weakened their restrictions on Telegram various times over the years for reasons which are probably unknowable without insider information. What is clear is that Telegram is absolutely sharing data (which they’ve chosen to design their service such that they can have access to) with various governments at various times; assuming that they never would share any with Russia is nonsensical. The extent to which they willingly share which data with which governments, versus which governments access data without their cooperation (by compromising their servers or coercing their engineers, which gives access to message contents due to their lack of e2ee) is not particularly interesting.
Beyond that, I recommend that you post on !nostupidquestions@lemmy.world or somewhere similar if you need people to explain why telegram is offtopic in communities about privacy technology. (This discussion is very offtopic in this thread so I won’t reply further here. If you really feel the need to argue about the above I recommend you do it in a new thread somewhere it isn’t offtopic; if you tag me maybe i’ll reply there.)

Regardless, perhaps someone else will find the Communities you shared, or “off-topic” mentioned several times relevant and useful, since I didn’t, sorry, being on Lemmy for 4 years now with more than 2 decades on IRC since UnderNet, OFTC, Freenode (now Libera) etc. where I got some social online interaction experience, and where actual specialists could back me up pointing to actual evidence.

I simply chose feddit.org, because it is my home instance and I am very happy with how it is being maintained and taken care for (i.e. see https://feddit.org/post/25348485 or https://feddit.org/post/5050805). It is operated by a non-profit organization (https://fediverse.foundation/) and Lemmy.world already seems like the biggest instance, so in the spirit of decentralization I think it makes sense to spread the content out a little.
Not too sure about lemmy.ml, I know the political views of some of the admin are at least questionable and in general it seems quite political, which I don’t really need for a chess community

.ml has extremely low tolerance for Western racism and propaganda and this upsets westerners greatly
I like watching and following chess but I really suck at playing. I get schooled so easily. I also feel too old to learn :P

Chess is a game of conquest pushed by imperialists seeking hegemony. But also, there is often promotion of pawns late in the game, and it was big in the USSR.
Therefore, chess may be discussed, but only after the workers have finished their labor for the good of the state.
Ml will usually consider fresh moderation requests on unmodded communities. It can probably be recovered. You can always redirect users to active sub if not.
