“nostupidquestions” and I asked a question and got downvoted hard. Guess this place I have been interested in is not that different than reddit.

There is not much context of this question. Define “white people”, do you mean those of European ancestry, those living in Western cultures (if so, which ones?), etc. It’s ambiguous.

If you see other questions, they describe the problem and specify the details. If you ask “why do people do this thing” with no context, whatever that thing is, it will be disliked as it’s hard to answer. And the implication of racism definitely makes some people uncomfortable.

If people do not agree with you, perhaps you are in the wrong. The Internet is cruel, but it is composed of people too you know? And you are one of those people, and you know many other people in your life, so treat people like proper people, even when it’s hidden internet people!

Forgive my American centrism, but what other culture would use the term “white” when discussing a group in relation to Black and Afro-Carribean cultural elements?

…what? The idea of “white” people is not very clear cut, as it turns out, human genetics are not black and white! Who woulda thunk?

I did not say I would use the term “white” for African or Carribean cultures, I doubt anybody does, I mentioned Western cultures of different kinds. And since a Brit is very different from an Aussie, which is different from a Pole, and all quite different from a Frenchie, the idea of “Western” cultures is broad and you need to be a bit more specific :D

I’m talking about a self descriptor, not a genetic test. If a group of people self identified as “White”, what group would I expect to see.

Depends on who you ask :D

Yeah, it does. It isn’t a perfect descriptor and it varies over time. However, if you are taking about a group self identifying as an ethnicity that other groups could recognize, you could probably get a timeframe of a dance that they started to do within a few years. You’re obviously not going to get an exact date and time, but you can get an approximate idea in years as to when a dance when from not being done to being done.

I’ve seen somewhat similar responses to questions I’ve asked, so you aren’t alone. That said, your question is well within what this place is about. Also, this is Lemmy; downvotes really don’t matter as much as Reddit.
