I’m Yakuza_Wolf_ReRise and I just migrated here from Reddit (I went by the name u/Yakuza-Wolf_Kiwami). To briefly explain what happened, I had a couple of imposters pretending to be me to do some dirty deeds, leading to my account to be suspended. I can’t go too deep into details, but that’s the basic jist of it. So I came here as an “alternative” to reddit up until my account is back and running.
So, AMA
99% of people here come from Lemmy, it’s my guess. I migrated when reddit closed down the API, at that time talking about lemmy didnt got you banned yet (like it’s now, so lemmy cannot be spoken of on Reddit). I did set up my personal instance to avoid any kind of censorship or defederation (=fediverse approach to censorship) and been happy ever since! I own my posts and comments, i can save and store any post or community i like even if that is deleted upstream, and nobody can delete my account ever again.
How long did it take for the stink to wash off?
Edit to add, Howdy! Welcome!
Coming here because of Reddit drama isn’t particularly special you know…
You make it sound like multiple people from here came from Reddit
Most people who patronize Lemmy came here because they got their Reddit account suspended, or got their pants twisted in a knot over something-or-other on Reddit and rage-quit Reddit, or - more constructively - didn’t agree with what Spez is doing, or don’t want to provide AI training data for Reddit to resell and make Spez richer for free.
Most users on Lemmy came from Reddit. I thought it was pretty obvious.
What would need to happen for you to not go back to reddit?
I dunno, never thought about that
How familiar are you with how lemmy and the fediverse works?
I really don’t know much, I just stumbled upon the site. Also, what’s Fediverse?
Fediverse is a network of interconnected social media like piefed lemny mastodon etc that all share the same protocol, ActivityPub, so that posts are shared between the platforms and comment as well more or less.
Each platform has a different scope like Twitter Facebook reddit etc, but they can all communicate.
There is no commercial backing to any, so no advertising budget or media push. But it’s also unkillable and will overtake the commercial socials, like Linux will overtake windows (not in my lifetime ofc. )
I came from reddit myself… At the time of the great migration.
What did you actually migrate now and not then? Where you on reddit back then?
Why now? Cuz I didn’t have much issues with the site until recently
As for where I was, I was all over the place; r/chillanimecorner, r/animedubs, r/swordartonline (yes, I like SAO), I even had my own subreddit (r/Mecha_Scrapyard)
Well, welcome here I guess. The community is much smaller but very much more active, and while there are bots, indeed they are a small minority.
Try to be as much active as you can, Lemmy is thriving but do not expect the background noise of reddit, nor the porn. Neither the censorship, but there is some.
I would also avoid well known instances like .world or .ml and find an instance that do not federated with too many others…
Go back plz
I’m still for a bit out of spite
He was just trying to make you feel at home like on reddit :)
