I’m Yakuza_Wolf_ReRise and I just migrated here from Reddit (I went by the name u/Yakuza-Wolf_Kiwami). To briefly explain what happened, I had a couple of imposters pretending to be me to do some dirty deeds, leading to my account to be suspended. I can’t go too deep into details, but that’s the basic jist of it. So I came here as an “alternative” to reddit up until my account is back and running.

So, AMA

      Reddit only exists as Reddit.com

The people that made Lemmy post the code to make a lemmy server online and give it away for free. A bunch of people set up their own “lemmy” servers (called an “instance”) and gave them different names. I’m on midwest.social, and you’re on thelemmy.club Each instance generally has its own theme, and the communities (subreddits) on that instance reflect that

The cool thing is all those different servers talk to each other with the ActivityPub protocol. I can browse and post in communities hosted on thelemmy.club and you can do the same on midwest.social. In fact you posted this AMA on a 3rd server (lemmy.ca) in their “Ask Me Anything” community.

Any social media site that uses ActivityPub can talk to a site that also uses it. Some sites are more Reddit like, some are like Twitter, etc.

One thing to know is lemmy doesn’t have an “algorithm” like Reddit – it’s not going to feed you content it thinks you’ll like. You have to seek out communities and subscribe to them. I suggest clicking Communities at the top of the page, then clicking All so you can see all the communities on all the different instances (servers) running lemmy or something compatible.

E.g. I’m subscribed to some communities on my instance @midwest.social, but there’s a bunch of bigger communities on other instances I’m subscribed to as well.

Fediverse is a network of interconnected social media like piefed lemny mastodon etc that all share the same protocol, ActivityPub, so that posts are shared between the platforms and comment as well more or less.

Each platform has a different scope like Twitter Facebook reddit etc, but they can all communicate.

There is no commercial backing to any, so no advertising budget or media push. But it’s also unkillable and will overtake the commercial socials, like Linux will overtake windows (not in my lifetime ofc. )
