But Hänsel & Gretel only found their way back, when they used white pebbles… the day they used breadcrumbs, birds ate the crumbs and so the siblings get lost in the woods until they find the witches cottage.
Breadcrumbs is how you DON’T successfully navigate your way back. Breadcrumbs is how you fall into the hands of some grubby old cannibal lady.

Hansel and Gretel are diminutives of Johann and Margaret. I guess that in English they are turned in John and Mary which have the same origin.

Yep - that’s the same one. Here in my country we call them “João e Maria” - this is my wikipedia page; seems like the portuguese call them by the original names
