When someone says “I’ll see you later” and you respond with “Not if I see you first” it sounds like you’re threatening to sneak up on them and take them out like a hitman.
I always decoded that as you’ll be dodging them. Like if you spot them on the street you’ll hide somewhere so they don’t see you.
That’s what I mean. If you ever spot someone looney toons style sneaking around town that’s me avoiding any possible interactions.
But they’ll eventually see you, even if it’s days or weeks later, right? Only one way to be sure they never see you again
Not if I see you first you wont
Invisible paint?
You’re underestimating my hiding skills
Pretty sure that’s what people NOT in the shower think.
Kinda grim, isn’t it? Like a sniper joke.
The other interpretation isn’t actually great, either. Bidding farewell by saying that you’ll avoid them if you can? Such friendship!
I’ve never cared for that insult/ribbing/banter approach to friendship.
The humour comes from the comedic irony of saying something so blatantly false. It only works with people secure in their friendship, and if they both appreciate comedic irony
That’s because I am. 🤷♂️
See you later. ;)
NOT IF I SEE YOU FIRST!
/runs away
bang
I’d always heard it as ‘only if I see you first’ which makes it a more dad joke style sillyness.
I don’t get it.
Why would they only see you if you see them first? Are you suggesting that they’re avoiding you?
Because you see them sooner/first, so they see you later
Ah, I see. “Only” doesn’t really make sense then, but that’s fine lol
Sort of meant as ‘only can be later if it’s not sooner’ but not like dad jokes are meant to make sense
