I was wondering, what people would actually do in that situation. Its somewhat expectable thing in some horror games, but i dont think i have seen the concept explored in this light.
Lets say you get an emergency message to your phone, the one they use to inform people of things like toxic chemical spills, accidents and everything. The message informs you to stay indoors and expressively says that you should not look outside no matter what, but does not clarify further why. And the message is repeated enough times that its clear its not joke/hoax/error.
What would you do?
Be very much amused that someone hacked the Emergency Alert System
Roll my eyes and get pissed off that my local TV channel is having technical problems. Again.
stay where you are your children are sleeping they are asleep don’t move just stay where you are
please stop calling
don’t look outside it’s not them
weapons are ineffective they cant leave the trees
stay where you are
they are not your children
Look outside, knowing my dumb ass. Or set up a mirror to do so
I don’t think a mirror would help much. I’d imagine it’d be some blinding radiation, think strong lasers or something. A camera feed would probably be okay though.
Look at my camera feed which looks outside.
I would immediately and involuntarily have looked outside immediately after the first message.
Human instincts are dumb like that.
And the message is repeated enough times that its clear its not joke/hoax/error.
I don’t think that’s possible. Given the fact that our national government recently used the system to tell everybody that it’s hot outside I don’t think there is any message too stupid that they wouldn’t send.
Immediately look outside.

Look outside, obviously
Yeah but like really quickly at first. Just a peek.
Immediately
Compulsively
I don’t think there’s anything that would convince me that such a message is not bullshit, so I’d probably look outside, and then search the internet to see who hacked what to pull such a stunt. The reason is that I can’t think of anything that could happen that would make looking outside a bad idea no matter where you are, and surely there are people who are physically outside and it is unlikely that they are all in mortal danger.
I can’t think of any event that could occur that would be dangerous to observe but not so dangerous that any additional action other than not observing it needs to be taken.
Laser attack.
I’d look, of course. Phenomena that can kill you just by looking at them exist only in horror stories and movies.
Funny you should use that word. There is an audiodrama called The Phenomenon with this exact premise. I wonder if OP just listened to it.
Radiation says hello
Silly radiation can’t get me if my eyes are closed.
The looking is not what kills you there.
UV-B / UV-C radiation will pretty much require you to look :)
That’s why you can only get a sunburn if your eyes are open, right?
No but you would go blind long before a sunburn happened.
I’d look at my camera feeds to see what’s outside without looking outside
Same. I’m too lazy sometimes that I’d rather check my camera feed instead of getting off the couch to look out the window.
One time i needed to go across the street to pick something up from another house. I used the live football on TV to see if it was still raining because it was at the local grounds. Getting up to twitch the curtains just seemed like effort.
SCP is leaking, again.
I’d immediately say “well that’s just fucking bullshit”, then go outside to look.
Check online, see what’s going on.
Christmas lights being lit up!
Ho ho It’s the Christmas time yo!
