I think he’s saying “it’s” just drops the bottom half of the “i” in “it is”. And the space.

The apostrophe looks like someone popped the tittle off an ‘i’ and smeared it a little. With that in mind, going from “it is” to “it’s” just discards the vertical line from ‘i’ and moves things together.
