@nostupidquestions @asklemmy if there were no browsers, would life come to an absolute standstill ? Wouldn’t we be able to visit websites hadn’t there been any such thing called a browser ???

And UseNet and IRC and FidoNet and file retrival by email and whatnot.

The web makes it easier and more accessible for the general public. Not to mention prettier than a green on green terminal.

I remember life moving along pretty well in the 80s without browsers.

This is an odd question. Without browsers, there wouldn’t be any websites to view. It’s like asking how would you see what your computer is doing if monitors weren’t invented. If an essential piece of technology didn’t exist, then all other technologies would have developed in a completely different way. Nobody would create things that are unable to be used.

Sort of a nonsense question. What would we do with our microwave ovens if nobody had figured out how to harness electricity? Why would there be websites if there were no browsers? Somebody somewhere would build a thing to make it easier to view the information they want from a remote system, one thing leads to another and now you have a browser. It’s like carcinization.

If every browser and every piece of tech attached to them disappeared tomorrow, we would immediately reinvent them.

Having a program to display interactive information from a network is far too useful for communication. Websites are just code that is purpose-built for being rendered by browser software, and a network to exchange the code. Even when the internet was text-terminal only, people still created ASCII art, text tables, etc. There is technically software (such as word processors, ereaders, etc.) that can render webpages, but how would you connect to a site? How would you do anything useful? Companies would have to add those features to existing software. If you think Edge is a pain, wait until you have to surf the web in MS Word!

Before web browsers we basically had 2 other renderings: terminal text and email readers. Prior to the WWW, most content you could consume on internet was text only email and text only forums. These formats did allow for attachments, though, so you could get images, audio, and video that way.

Oh you kids and your modern ways. By dial-up modem and terminal software. Each BBS had their own number to call.

Yes without browsers life stands absolutely still, which is the obvious explanation that humans do not exist, your belief in your own existence is a lie. Because there was a time when there were no browsers no internet and even no computers, but it is impossible to investigate how such times were, because life was at an absolute still.

I guess there is a thing like stupid questions.
