Haven’t seen the movie but I bet there are another million things that doesn’t make any sense for a skinny woman to be able to do.
Physics leave the room when women starts swinging…
It’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, physics was never invited in this story.
Alternative (meta)physics
Dirk Gently was so fucking goddamn good.
I miss it.
It’s all farty butt-talk, if you ask me.

Wild to call out a character that suffers from neck-down alopecia. Waow.
There’s this story that Mark Hammil tells about being on the set of Star Wars and he mentions to Harrison Ford that their hair should be wet, since it was just wet in the previous scene.
And Ford says something like, “This ain’t that kind of movie, kid. If the audience is talking about our hair, something has already gone wrong.”
I actually really like that line. I remember watching the latest Star Wars trilogy and just nitpicking. I’m not a super fan, I don’t even own anything Star Wars. But, the movies kept pulling out stupid takes that my suspension of disbelief was gone and I kept focusing on hyper details.
I also like that Harrison Ford calls everyone kid.
Please remember that Star Wars was released in 1977. It absolutely blew people’s minds because they were doing something that nobody had ever seen before, to an audience that was just perfectly ripe for receiving it. It would have been impossible for them to cover every single base, when they were doing such ground breaking things, you kind of have to see it in the light of that, like you would watch Metropolis by Fritz Lang, or Nosferatu.
You can’t nitpick it the same way you can Marvel slop in 2026, there was so many ground breaking things, most of all it was a genuinely alien experience because we hadn’t really seen such a well designed intergalactic society and world building before, that all the minor stuff is just afterthoughts to what the greater story was.
It’s like finding flaws in a renaissance painting, or the Iliad, or classical opera- which is a fitting comparison considering SW is the definition of space opera, down to containing one of the most genuinely masterful, memorable, and well crafted scores of all time.
Actually, you can always nitpick some more.
Mark Hammil does an excellent Harrison Ford impression, so there’s a possibility that the “kid” is part of the impression, rather than a direct quote. Also, I was doing the quote from memory, so I might have remembered it wrong.
But I also like the thought that Harrison Ford calls everyone kid.
He is the one to pull it off every single time with perfect naturalness.
Ford’s attitude about the films has always just pissed me off. If you don’t like something, which you clearly don’t, why you do it in the first place?
Hell, I’d argue his career wouldn’t be what it became without star wars and he should at least be able to acknowledge that.
He always just comes off as “I’m better than you, I’m better than this franchise, I’m better than anything”
Christopher Eccleston famously hated Dr who, and he never seems to say a negative thing about it. Plenty of MCU actors hate the MCU, they don’t talk shit, and I can’t see them talking shit about them for several decades either.
Ford struggled with anxiety and imposter syndrome early on, and developed his tough, flippant exterior around that as a coping mechanism. So there are a lot of stories about him saying callous, tough guy things. But he’s quite a softie who really loves the art of acting, so I don’t think he’s really dismissing everything and everyone outright.
Christopher Eccleston famously hated Dr who
its my understanding that he hated Russell T Davis because Davis was abusive to the staff.
I think Ford’s attitude is similar to Guinness’ attitude - it’s not that he hates Star Wars, it’s that he hates that it’s completely overshadowed his other work and nobody ever talks to him about any other part of his career.
You mean like Indiana Jones?
Ford’s attitude about the films has always just pissed me off. If you don’t like something, which you clearly don’t, why you do it in the first place?
I mean I don’t love my job but I keep showing up for the paycheck.
I hate my job and I don’t even have a job.
And you probably do a good job, just like Ford (although I’ve never seen a single star wars movie and it’s going to stay that way).
why you do it in the first place?
it paid more than carpentry. No, really.
dumptrucks of money.
Which is why sigourney weaver kept making aliens movies
And fucking ACED every one of them.
That’s the sign of a consummate professional. You show up and you do it anyway, and you nail it.
Famously, Agatha Christie hated Hercule Poirot, yet she still wrote him into some of the best detective stories in the world.
Yep. I find it interesting, too, that the first appearance of ford is in some western tv show from 1967… it took a full decade for him to become a real star. meanwhile he worked on FFC’s cabinets lol
Ah but carpentry is rewarded in the kingdom of heaven.
yeah, if you’re really lucky people will notice you and you’ll nail your big debut
Hahahahahaha
MCU is genuinely mass market slop though. I cannot believe people watch that drivel, and I judge people who do. That’s all I have to say on the matter, good day, Sir, I SAID GOOD DAY.
how i feel watching an apocalyptic movie where all the men are clean shaven
Always bugged me how the grass wasn’t overgrown in The Walking Dead. Who the hell is going around mowing lawns in the zombie apocalypse?!

thank you for the good laugh
The same thing that is lighting the candles in caves and hideouts in Doom and Skyrim. It’s their summer job
There is that videogame based on that premise. Goblin cleanup. You reset and clean dungeons in between heros.
Now that you mention it, there’s a lot of ammo laying around a lot of video game caves.
Oh damn! Great catch, those are definitely one of the details why I could never get into the show. My brain registered it subconsciously without verbalizing it, I just knew I didn’t like it or it felt dumb for some reason.
It was just emo drama happen to be set in a zombie apocalypse setting that wasn’t even believable.
Not as bad as the comic though. That one sucked so bad.
Sheep?
Zombie sheep.
Wouldn’t zombie sheep eat baaaaa-rains?
…baaad sheep
PLANTS vs ZOMBIES
My biggest gripe is when they’re not cleanly shaven, visibly dirty and rugged, and then their teeth are blinding white. Motherfucker even my own teeth don’t fucking blind me and I wash my teeth.
Enamels fucking ruined historical dramas for me while we’re at it. Braces too tbh, ohhh we used to have actual snagle teeth in my day 😩
They’re always “styled dirty”, so they look filthy but somehow perfect. It’s like when the hero gets a cut, it’s always this cool looking little streak across the cheekbone, or if it’s on the body it’s a perfect 10cm scar on the shoulder, or close by the pelvis so they can show off their abs. It takes me out of the suspension of disbelief, because I can’t get lost in the acting if the acting is done by these perfect creatures that look NOTHING like they haven’t slept, are underfed, paranoid, depressed, and on the brink.
Sure, that is harder to achieve, because good art is hard to achieve, and I just don’t dig cheap art, what can I say.
Part of that (the cut placement) is making the prosthetics though. Yeah, you can make good looking cuts elsewhere, but the more the site moves, the more hassle it is. Facial prosthetics in particular run into trouble when they’re near the mouth or brows. So you end up with cheeks being preferred overall.
With the body, you run into issues with making something visible, movable, and believable. Gashes across the abs fail at all three, whereas shoulder and pecs are solid choices. Legs would be too, but they’re not in frame as much, and shouldn’t be without a good reason.
Everything on screen is a compromise of some sort.
Hm I hadn’t thought of that angle
they use whitening products to make thier teeth that white. i dint know people did this excessively to thier teeth. it actually damages your teeth in the end.
The Ghost and the Darkness, Val Kilmer. I enjoyed that movie a lot. But every time that handsome devil smiled it took me right out of 18th century Kenya and straight to 1996 LA TMZ.
Motherfucker even my own teeth don’t fucking blind me and I wash my teeth.
Maybe you should try brushing instead.
…So you get volume and lushness to your teeth.
Remind me of “what if your teeth were flaccid but got naturally hard when you were hungry” (not my joke)
I can’t stop laughing. Thank you.
I also wash my teeth. Im just using regular dawn right now and my teeth are still yellow too. Maybe I need to try that citrus stuff with the grit in it.
Bruh, when you’re out in the shit and get a chance to shave, you do it. If you’re used to a certain length, and CANT shave, it’s like #3 on the list of things you dream about when thinking about getting back to civilization. So if you’re always in the shit, you’ll always put it high on the list.
YOU do, maybe. In a survival situation, trust me, that is not high on the list of concerns.
Once survival has gone on for some time (depends on the person), you’re going to start making a few ‘comfort’ decisions. Granted, I wouldn’t go raid a CVS for razors but if I found a pair of scissors I might start doing a trim.
Also, hate the feeling of greasy hair, so I’m quick to cut it off or rub dirt all over it if I can’t take care of it.
Absolutely, getting a shower and having soap on your body is Magical Jesus Heaven when you’ve been in the dirt for a longer period of time, and it’s definitely an important morale motivator, actually just longing for it, so it definitely has survival value apart from basic hygiene making sure to let the body heal and not catch infections and so on…
I suppose the scope of the situation matters for what we are talking about. In a true survival situation, it’s an afterthought. In anything below that it becomes proportionally more accessible and pertinent, of course.
Edit: Shit I answered twice without noticing, I just re-read your comment and had something else to say I suppose :) <3
Kind of like a dog rolling around in muck to get the smell just right. I can feel that
There is a lot to be said for morale improving things like hot showers, clipping your nails, and all of that, but they are always luxuries (valuable luxuries), though they could certainly act as motivators. When you live under duress, you find that you can actually get used to very base forms of existence, over a long time.
Edit: ah shit for some reason I can’t see that Ive commented on you before so I keep doing it thinking it’s a new comment. Shit, I’m gonna write a letter to the devs of this app, Eternity, I have many opinions on many of the tings.
Edit2: then again one might wonder how come I can’t recognize a comment I’ve read three times… Hmmm
I meant after basic survival needs have been met. Obviously food, water, shelter are more important. But humans are hard wired to feel a sense of some hygiene, though you wouldn’t know it from some people.
We don’t like to feel icky, for sure, but the scope for what we consider “icky” narrows a lot when we’re trying to survive.
True, and a beard can be useful to break up the visual lines that the human brain identifies as a face. It’d only be a part of the overall camouflage profile, but if it’s already 1/3 done for you, it’s a win. But I can’t stand my beard getting that long. It’s like wearing a steel wool sweater to me.
Edit: not just human brain, animal brain.
The utility of facial hair is modest. It has potential for sure! But first let’s have dinner.
Edit:

Love hurts
They always have perfectly manicured eyebrows too
Maybe they forced her to get laser hair removal when they were messing with her. Super underrated show! I love Dirk Gently, whatever character has screen time at a given moment is my favorite character.
Sorry, which show is this? Dirk Gently’s Holistic etc? Or the miniseries Dirk Gently (2012)?
I should re-watch it I guess, it’s been a while. (The lady still looks familiar though)
Wasn’t this scene pre-messing-with, or had she previously been at the CIA facility before the show started?
She was imprisoned as a child/teen.
Maybe it was just luck that her pits are shaved. I mean her “super power” was basically just a Rube Goldeberg machine of happenstance going on around her.
100% guarantee that if she did have armpit hair some other sad bastard would be making a post commenting on it
I’m not sure that’s a good enough reason to avoid showing women with body hair in media.
I’m not saying it is. Just that you can’t please anybody it seems
Eh, diversity in media is more important than sexist assholes who think they have a say in how women are supposed to look.
Yes. I agree. I’m not sure why you’re arguing with me about it
That user has a distinctly combative tone in general.
That’s rich coming from you ;)
I’m not arguing, I was expanding on your comment.
Where was I arguing with you?
Just felt like you were
This is a site designed to support and encourage discussion and conversation between users.
I’m not arguing with you by engaging you in conversation based on the content of your comment.
Honestly, this is still an argument in favor of it, in my opinion. Those people only have their opinions because they were normalized at one point in time. If they’re angry with you then you did something right, and hopefully in the next generation that opinion will be even less normalized.
Ah yes, the famous problem of making everyone happy.
Hey some people are into that!
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
ended too soon :(
Eh it’s over twice the length of the original BBC one. I wouldn’t have minded seeing more. But it ended at a good spot at least. Honestly surprised it lasted that long with Elijah in it post LOTR.
It’d be hotter if she didn’t.
I loved this series. Was amazing.
First season was over the top great.
Second season dropped off a bit but still a good watch.
Saddest ending with them setting up s3
What is it?
Dirk Gently
Not everybody’s armpit hair is dark black and long and curly. This is what my spouse’s armpits would look like whether they had shaved recently or not.
So your wives natural unshaved look is shaved. Yep sure there.
Let’s not pretend like it’s normal for the media to show women unshaved.
That has nothing to do with what I said.
The discussion isn’t around the differences in people’s body hair. It’s about media’s representation of women’s bodies.
Your comment would have more of a point if it was commonplace to see unshaved women in media.
If it was common place to see unshaved women then my comment wouldn’t have made any damn sense. My comment is only relevant because there are people who don’t shave and yet still look like they do.
Anyway I just had a tangential thought: my opinion of women showing off their armpit hair is identical to how I would feel about anyone who never wipes their ass after they shit. Both equally vomit-inducing. Just my opinion.
Armpit hair isn’t the equivalent of literal shit.
Need I repeat, IN MY OPINION, both armpit hair & shitty butt cracks are equally hygienically disgusting.
Only women? Not men?
The most likely reason the actress was portrayed as unshaven was because women are overwhelmingly presented as hairless in media. Not because some people have naturally light hair.
OK, nothing I have said is against that point. So your point is fuck me for adding to the conversation or what?
I already explained why I replied to your comment - the reason this actress is portrayed as hairless is because we live in a patriarchal society that has strict gender expressions for women and that includes being hairless.
I wish that the conversation could be around the differences in people’s bodies instead of the media presenting a very specific image of how women are supposed to present.
I think the joke was more that she doesn’t know what fruit shampoo is. She was excited to shower, she knows that bathing is even if she doesn’t do it often.
Does that mean she’s removing body hair? No, I get why it seems inconsistent. I do think humans have a very diverse expression of body hair and some people have barely any visible body hair even if they don’t remove it.
If I want to appear hairless I need to shave daily (or more, dark hair on pale skin RIP) whereas I have friends who appear hairless on their legs and armpits unless you get really close. No, it’s not from waxing or laser, it’s just the texture and colour of their body hair.
I’m not trying to suggest this is definitely what is going on here and it would be nice to see a wider expression of appearances in media. Maybe then we’d get over the narrow view of “acceptable” body hair.
My ex gf never had to shave anything because she had alopecia. Looked completely normal from the neck up but from the neck down the only place she grew hair was in the crotch, and even that was thin and faint.
Her legs and pits were naturally hairless.
